Worship at Church of the Cross is an avenue through which our church community praises God through prayer, music, education and fellowship. Musical contributions from the Alleluia Singers, the Chamber Singers, Grace Notes, Cross Chords, Youth Choirs, Sunbeams and Carol Choir, Two Hand bell Choirs and the Trinity Brass exalt the glory of God.
Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday
of each month and on special occasions. We also hold special services on Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday,
Thanksgiving Eve and Christmas Eve. Joys and Concerns has become a very meaningful part of our Sunday
services enabling the congregation to be aware of changes affecting our members including births, deaths, illnesses and marriages. Local and national musicians participate several times a year on
Sunday afternoons in the Organ Vesper Series, which draws an audience from throughout Omaha and beyond.
Christian Education is an integral
part of our church life, not only on Sundays, but also throughout the week. The curriculum by each age group is as follows:Preschool “LITTLE BLESSINGS” (Gospel Light); K-6 WORKSHOP ROTATION MODEL; 7-8th
grade-JR HIGH TALKSHEETS (Youth Specialties); 9-12th grade-APPLIED
CHRISTIANITY (Church Written) and “THE JESUS I NEVER KNEW” (Yancey);
Adults-GOSPEL OF JOHN (church Written) and CONTEMPORARY ISSUES (Christianity
Today).Wednesday’s Cornerstone Club
utilizes
an
adaptation of Logos material with classes before and after dinner including
Confirmation. During the week adults
study The Book of Revelation which is taught by a retired ordained
professor. The ‘Discovery Preschool’,
with its own paid director and staff, operates within our building and provide
quality early education for our community.
Further opportunities for our children include Vacation Bible School for
ages 3-8 and overnight programs for 3-6th graders at Camp Calvin
Crest our resident Presbyterian Church camp. Calvin Crest is also a beautiful retreat center for adult groups.
Christian
Fellowship is promoted through numerous organizations within our church as well
as through several all-church functions.
Our annual Advent Dinner heralds the season’s beginning with a festive
celebration including dinner and entertainment. Two old-fashioned ice
cream
socials also provide wonderful opportunities to meet and greet old and new
friends. Our fall visit to Vala’s
Pumpkin Patch is filled with activities for all ages from dinner and pumpkin
gathering to spooky “Haunted Houses.”
We have established “hands-on” mission work with many organizations within our city and provide for overseas missions as well. To support their mission trips our Senior High group has performed Godspell, Pistol Packing Sal, and Philemon at church-held dinner theaters. Their outreach has extended from coast to coast as well as to Mexico. Our Senior and Junior High programs look forward to a new dynamic leadership that will be provided by one of our two new pastors.
The Stephen Ministry program
fulfills a need for a caring and supportive network using trained members of
the congregation. The program is ready
to assist individuals in need through its listening ministry, but there is
currently a need for pastoral leadership and support.
