A mailbox slot near the Information Desk will be set up for
the committee where we could pick up printed materials. Minutes will be emailed to committee members
and following their approval, will be posted to the PCOC website. A few paper copies will be available at the
Information Desk for non-users of Internet.
Mention of the committee’s work will run in every Sunday bulletin and
Cross Currents.
The previous Building Expansion committee will be asked to
attend the next meeting of this committee on Nov. 21. We need to decide how best to use/ learn from the work of that
committee and provide them direction for their visit. Discussion:
- I have
several questions to ask of them, including “What would you do
differently?”
- If we
recommend a building expansion project, will this committee oversee that
process, fund raising, etc?
Probably not; there should be new nominations.
- We
must communicate our work to the congregation, garner their trust, appear
organized, and not appear to be keeping “secrets”.
- We all
need to be spokesmen for the committee.
- The
segment of the congregation that visits the building only on Sunday
mornings can’t see needs for expansion, because they only see the
sanctuary less-than-full.
- Is
there a better way to inform the congregation of the shortcoming of the
current building?
- I have
made a chart of current usage of various rooms in the building. (Handout)
- Pictures
showing overflow conditions would help Sunday-only members “get it”
- Lack
of space is not so much a problem as poor functionality of space.
- We need
to determine what the congregation wants/needs to become, and then
communicate to them how the physical aspects of the building contribute to
what we want to become. We need to
identify criteria by which we define “success”—what will it take to
move from what we are now to what we want to become?
- I’ve
noticed immediate needs of the building such as roof and boilers
replacements. Is there money
available for those necessary repairs in addition to potential funding for
expansion?
- There
is a logic break in the former committee’s presentation.
- At the
next meeting we could see the whole presentation and ask questions about
the
rationale and intentions.
- The
former committee should be congratulated for the work they did. That work was done “behind the scenes”
as requested of them, and should not be discounted because it was not
implemented right away.
- What
updates have been made to ADA requirements, building codes, etc. since
those plans were drawn? Are signs
for guiding visitors around the building part of architects’ plans?
